“The Lion of the Shakya Clan”. 

Shakyamuni Buddha is regarded as the historical Buddha who lived in the VIth century B.C. in Kapilavastu, a kingdom in southern Nepal. Gautama Siddhartha was the son of king Suddhodana and queen Mayadevi, the rulers of the Shakya Clan. He attained enlightenment at the age of 36, hence he was called the Buddha that means “the Enlightened One”. 

In thangkas, he is depicted sitting on a lotus flower, his right hand touches the ground, his left hand carries a bowl. Sariputra and Maudgalyayana, Buddha’s two main disciples stand by his side.
