In Buddhism, Mahakala, “The Great Black One” is the protector of the Dharma and of Buddhist sanctuaries. He is the Protector of Wisdom, that is to say. Its activities are immensely vast, beside protecting the Dharma, Mahakala protects, supports and looks upon all Buddhist practitioners whilst he gathers favorable circumstances for the practice of Buddhism.
He has 75 aspects. Nevertheless, many are considered as the emanations of Avalokiteshvara.
Often, he is blue in colour and is mostly depicted with 6 arms. He wears a crown adorned with 5 human skulls, a lion skin surrounds his waist.
Mahakala is one of the eight terrible deities found in the Buddhist Pantheon. In Hinduism, Mahakala is the fearful form of the Great God Shiva.
